Embarassed By Your Heritage? If your heritage seems to oppressive, you can select one that is almost indistinguishable to outsiders, but much more palatable. For example, Americans embarassed by their empire can be Canadians! Germans can pretend to be Austrian, or with some practice, Swiss!

Heritage is distilled history, stripped of its complexity. Your ethnic and cultural heritage does NOT mean you are identical to your ancestors. As in all other aspects of identity, you can steal what you like and leave the uncomfortable or nonconforming elements behind!
